On October 18, 2024, the new exhibition REFLECTED. Art as a Social Mirror was officially inaugurated. This exhibition is dedicated to a central theme of the Böhme Collection and the art of the Lost Generation: societal transformation. The artists featured in the exhibition reflect the profound social and political changes of their time in their works—from the aftermath of the First World War and the establishment of the Weimar Republic to the era of National Socialism, the Second World War, and the post-war period.
The event began with an introductory speech by the President of the State Parliament, Dr. Brigitta Pallauf, who highlighted the museum’s significance as a nonprofit institution for Salzburg and praised the commitment of Prof. Heinz Böhme:
“First, allow me, also on behalf of our Governor Dr. Wilfried Haslauer, to express what a stroke of luck—indeed, what a privilege—this museum is in the heart of our city. As a private, nonprofit art institution, it ensures a permanent place in the cultural memory for those artists of the Lost Generation who, as Rainer Zimmermann phrased it, ‘were repeatedly crushed by the wheels of world history.’ For this, on behalf of the region, THANK YOU, esteemed Professor.”
Following her speech, the foundation’s chairman and museum founder, Prof. Dr. Heinz R. Böhme, addressed the audience. He specifically thanked the members of the museum’s patrons and supporters group, as well as other benefactors, whose numerous art sponsorships and donations significantly contribute to the museum’s preservation.
The scientific highlight of the evening was provided by the curator, Marie-Christin Gebhardt, who introduced the exhibition and elaborated on the unique features of the collection. She emphasized, among other works, the donation of Mirror Cabinet by the artist Rudolf Heinisch, which serves as the poster image for the current exhibition.
The exhibition REFLECTED. Art as a Social Mirror will be on display until September 27, 2025. A brochure bearing the same title has been published and is available for purchase at the museum shop or online.
