5 Years of the Museum Art of the Lost Generation

6 October 2022

You’re invited to celebrate with us!

Five years ago, on 6 October 2017, the Museum Art of the Lost Generation ceremoniously opened with its first exhibition “We haven’t seen each other for so long. The Böhme Collection“, and still remains the youngest museum in Salzburg.

With his extraordinary and quite unusual collection, the museum’s founder Prof. Dr. Heinz R. Böhme has created a space to discuss art and artists who have been largely overlooked.

As the only museum in the German-speaking area to specialize exclusively on this topic, we are able to re-examine and present art and artists that have long since been misunderstood, neglected or forbidden. The collection has now grown to over 600 artworks, on which our young team of art-historians conduct pioneering research. Since March 2020, the museum has been run by the founder’s non-profit foundation.

On the day of our anniversary, Thursday 6 October 2022, there will be a varied programme for all museum visitors.

From October 4th 2022: Painting of the Month October – Anniversary Edition

What do rediscovered works of art tell us about their time? Whose art was successful and who was disregarded or even forbidden from creating? In this context, every work is a highlight!

Since the opening of the two current exhibitions “FORBIDDEN BEAUTY” and “See you in PARIS!” on 18 May 2022, the Museum Art of the Lost Generation has introduced a new series: the Painting of the Month. This provides visitors with ongoing new insights into the Böhme Collection while offering interesting information about the artwork and contemporary events, as well as captivating biographical information and curiosities.

Discover October’s Painting of the Month with us: The charismatic portrait of the young Mela Kempinski (1908-1973), wife of the last official heir to the famous hotel chain, Gerhard Kempinski. Painted in 1933 by the Berlin portrait painter Eugen Spiro (1874-1972), it was painted only shortly before the artist was banned from working and two years before the sitter was forced to emigrate. A popular highlight of our opening exhibition in 2017, this portrait has since become the “face” of the collection. We are therefore celebrating our 5th anniversary with this iconic portrait as the Painting of the Month. It will be on view until 29 October 2022.
