Vernissage BEYOND BECKMANN

From the Master Class to the Böhme Collection

11 May 2023

On 11 May 2023, the new exhibition BEYOND BECKMANN. From the Master Class to the Böhme Collection opened – 90 years after the dissolution of Max Beckmann’s (1884-1950) master class. His master students were among the most promising talents of the Frankfurt Art School (also known as the “Städel School”) between 1925 and 1933. Yet they are hardly known today. In this exhibition, 12 of these lost artists are now brought together again for the first time.

At the beginning of the event, the audience was musically introduced to the 1920s and 1930s by the Klaus Kircher Swing Trio. Afterwards, the deputy chairman of the Prof. Dr. Heinz R. Böhme charitable foundation, Marcus Totz, welcomed the guests. On behalf of Prof. Heinz R. Böhme, the founder of the museum and chairman of the foundation, who was prevented from attending at short notice, Marcus Totz emphasised the personal concerns of the museum’s founder:

“The reappraisal and research of the artists of the Lost Generation is a personal concern of Prof. Dr. Böhme. This has now found its place as a legacy within the framework of the Prof. Dr. Heinz R. Böhme charitable foundation in Salzburg. The aim is to find, conserve and present to the public these people who were suppressed for a variety of reasons at the time of National Socialism.”

He also presented some important international donations to the museum that can be seen in the new exhibition. Governor Dr. Wilfried Haslauer not only opened the exhibition with a speech, but also acted as its patron to underline its significance. In his speech, he emphasised the important work of the Museum Art of the Lost Generation:

“It is a really great achievement of Prof. Böhme and his team to work through this period to also show us the beauty, creative power and vitality of this art and I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart.”

Afterwards, the curator, Marie-Christin Gebhardt, gave an introduction into the exhibition, emphasising the important research work taking place at the museum.

Furthermore, the evening was musically accompanied by jazz standards from the 1920s and 30s.

The exhibition BEYOND BECKMANN. From the Master Class to the Böhme Collection, is on view until 24 September 2024.
